College Profile

Erie County Community College of PA (EC3PA), America’s newest community college, is a comprehensive community college located in northwest Pennsylvania currently offering three degrees: Associate of Applied Science in IT/Networking; Associate of Arts, a liberal arts education degree that leads to transfer to four-year colleges; and, Associate of Applied Business in Management and Entrepreneurial Thinking. EC3PA is focused on enhancing the county’s economic condition by increasing educational opportunities for the diverse population in Erie County.

Position Summary

As EC3PA continues to develop new programs, the College is interested in engaging individuals who wish to bring a unique community college experience to Erie County. Faculty possessing a commitment to entrepreneurial thinking, creativity and a strong foundation to the community college mission can experience success in our classrooms.

The usual faculty load per semester is 15 credit hours for a total of 30 credit hours annually. Faculty may be assigned other work in addition to their teaching assignment to meet College needs. Faculty also play an integral role in supporting students as academic advisors. Faculty also mentor students through connections outside of the classroom and, when necessary, referring them to college resources that support students both academically and socially.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver Instruction
    • Prepare and teach college-level Biology classes and labs in person and in the online environment
    • Develop lessons that align with course and program outcomes
    • Prepare, distribute, and submit syllabi for all assigned sections in accordance with college policies
    • Facilitate student learning by using a variety of classroom activities including collaborative formats, discussion, lecture, demonstration, online, and technology-based techniques.
    • Utilize online Learning Management Software to enhance and support instruction
    • Select, review, and develop course materials and resources that minimize student financial impact
  • Support Student Success
    • Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse students’ needs
    • Provide students with regular and timely feedback
    • Maintain accurate records of student progress
    • Engage with students outside of class to encourage continued academic growth
    • Participate in academic advising
  • Provide Student Assistance
    • Refer students to student support services
    • Accommodate the unique needs of all students
    • Maintain regular availability for student inquiry and discussion
  • Maintain academic and student records as required by the institution and comply with requirements for reports and meeting deadlines as established
  • Participate in program review and assessment activities; utilize outcomes assessment to improve learning/instruction
  • Participate in committees, extra and co-curricular activities
  • Participate in faculty and self-evaluation processes, including continuous improvement efforts
  • Complete training required to perform effectively and remain current with trends in the discipline and higher education
  • Attend faculty and college meetings
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
  • Demonstrate responsible and proper use of college resources
  • As a member of the college community, faculty and staff should perform their professional responsibilities in accordance with the goals, missions, and plans of the department, program, division, and College, in addition to contributing to the creation of a collegial culture
  • Assist in assessing equipment and supplies, scheduling classes, and departmental routines
  • Prepare/maintain lab and materials; enforce lab safety procedures
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Biology (Plant, Animal, Human, Anatomy & Physiology, etc.)
  • Master’s Degree in a related area and 18 credit hours of graduate level coursework in Biology
  • Two years of teaching biology
  • Effective communication skills and interpersonal skills with the capacity to work successfully in a culturally diverse college community

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience teaching at the community college level
  • Experience developing curriculum
  • Experience with Blackboard or similar online Learning Management System
  • Flexibility to teach at any of the EC3PA locations/sites and online
  • Demonstrated skills in using modern educational technology, including multimedia-based instruction
